The film is about an alien boy, Hugo, who’s living on a small, far-away planet. One day he gets his first pet as a present – a real scuba diver taken from Earth. His excitement about the diver knows no limits, and in his childlike selfishness he doesn’t realize that he’s playing his terrible yet cute games with an intelligent human being.
Our first part of the lecture will focus on pioneers and experiments. We will also find out how Ukrainian animators in the 1920s made advertisements, propaganda, and children’s stories, sometimes even combining all of them in a single artwork. We will also discuss the problems that Ukrainian animation faced and how it bothered and threatened the Soviet government. In the second part of the lecture, we will talk about how and where the animated film heritage is preserved today. What is the size and significance of the animation collection kept at the Dovzhenko Centre.

She is supposed to watch her best friend Sophie’s dog for her over the summer – but she finds out that Sophie and her family have fled to the West via Hungary. Fritzi does everything she can to be reunited with her friend. With a subtle sense for pedagogy and many moving moments this film will introduce a young generation to the complex political and historical events that led to the German reunification.
