AnimatekaPRO: In Person – Réka Bucsi
Synopsis:
Réka Bucsi (1988) is an independent animation filmmaker from Hungary. She earned her BFA and MFA at the animation department of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest. Her graduation film Symphony no. 42 was shortlisted for an Oscar in 2014. Her films were screened in official shorts competition programmes at Berlinale, SXSW, Sundance, Annecy, and won over 50 international awards. In 2013/2014 she attended Animation Sans Frontiéres (ASF), a European animation production workshop.

Abstract haiku-like situations reveal the changing atmosphere on one planet caused by a meteoric impact in a distant solar system. Inhabitants on this pulsing planet become one with each other, in various ways, in this three-chapter exploration of affection.

Based on unconventional narrative, the film presents a subjective world through 47 scenes. The small events, interlaced by associations, express the irrational coherence of our surroundings. The surreal situations are based on the interactions of humans and nature. The film premiered in the competition program of Berlinale in 2014, and was shortlisted for the 2015 Oscars.

Acclaimed animation directors Péter Vácz and Joseph Wallace led an intensive four day stop motion workshop as part of the PRIMANIMA World Festival of First Animations in Budapest (Oct. 2017). Twelve international participants joined the directors to learn the practice and theory around their methodologies of creating cinematic puppet animation from simple materials.

The keynote will present the complete process of creating visual effects that include animated CG elements, from pre-production to finalizing the shot, with a focus on practical workflows and collaboration between different departments. We will go through the roles of the VFX supervisor and producer, working on the breakdown, storyboard, and previs, and how to make the right decisions between physical and digital elements already in the pre-production stage. In post-production, we will examine postvis, the key role of the VFX editor, and especially the integration of animation into visual effects: the workflow connection to layout, assets, rigging, animation, FX, lighting, and final compositing. The lecture will conclude with an overview of project management, approval processes, and finally the current possibilities and limitations of using AI in VFX.

In this masterclass Éva Darabos will discuss why the block of flats areas are so important for her and will offer a glimpse into where her inspiration was coming from to create her award-winning short animation, Bye Little Block! which received the Best Design Award at The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF), and won awards in Poznań and Barcelona. She will share her personal experiences about how the whole project started and how the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest and her crew helped her to develop the original idea into a graduation film. There are many aspects to discuss: technical steps, adapting to a new role, teamwork, communication. Later, she will give a fresh and retrospective insight to her student years at MOME Anim. At the end she will share her feelings about film festivals, the afterlife of Bye Little Block! and her future plans and projects.
