Animation is often labelled “for children” without asking which children. This session introduces the Young Audience Rating System, a practical tool that connects the developmental characteristics of each age group, from toddlers to late adolescents, with the elements that shape an animated film: story, characters, emotions, visual language and humour. Media psychologist Martina Peštaj explains how attention, emotional understanding, moral reasoning and the sense of humour change with age, and what this means in practice. Aimed at creators, producers, distributors, broadcasters and festival programmers working with young viewers. The Young Audience Rating System was developed within the project Animation HUB. Speakers: Martina Peštaj (media psychologist), Lucia Dubravay Trautenberger (Animation HUB) Martina Peštaj (media psychologist) Martina Peštaj is a Slovenian media psychologist and film currator specialising in children’s and youth media. This music video is a computer-generated animation made in an open-source program Golly. The program is used as a simulation of cell growth. The background is made with animated objects in the scanner. The story follows the lyrics of the song. First, the growth seems unlimited, then a peak comes, we break and vanish and again and again, the game of life. Behind this circle, an everlasting nostalgia is present.

Accompanied by a familiar melody, the Argentinian video clip draws us into the vortex of a world whose animation is based on the magic of the zoopraxinoscope. Combined with other animation techniques, the result is an unusual work using not only a fascination with primordial animation devices, but also hand-drawn or stop-motion animation.

Pixar has been at the forefront of 3D animation innovations for nearly 30 years, developing new methods and technologies with nearly every new project. With their newest feature film “Elemental” hitting theaters, we take a look back at the ways Disney/Pixar has evolved over time. The studio has made advancements in how characters move, going from robotic motion in 1995’s “Toy Story” to characters who can intricately play music in “Coco” and “Soul.” In the early Pixar days, human characters were hidden in the shadows, but breakthroughs in movies like “The Incredibles” and “Brave” paved the way for more believable human characters. And clothes, which were once stiff, took center stage in “Onward” thanks to innovations from movies like “Monsters Inc.”

An official Cannes selection and winner of festival prizes and awards worldwide, ANOTHER DAY OF LIFE is a daringly ambitious dive into the chaos of war, based on the book by the journalist Ryszard “Ricardo” Kapuściński, one of the world’s most compelling chroniclers of conflict. Intercutting a graphically bold animation style with interviews and archival footage, the visually striking film conveys a rare immediacy as it tells of the outbreak of civil war following Angola’s independence from Portugal in 1975. Against all advice, Kapuściński is intent on driving south into the heart of the bloody conflict to find the isolated rebel leader Farrusco. His animated trip through corpse-strewn roads conveys an undeniable urgency, while the documentary testimony reminds us that we are watching actual history.
