The Concrete Jungle
Synopsis:
The Concrete Jungle is a short animated film inspired by the limitless imagination of children. When a neighbour drills into a wall, who knows what a child thinks of a sound he doesn’t know and can’t identify. Maybe a herd of bisons is trampling through the neighbour‘s flat, or a savage cannibalistic tribe lives there. Thrilling tales of a small boy in a housing estate where even the most exciting adventures in the world can take place.

Magdaleda leaves her home town, friends and a dog. On her journey, she is surprised by a strange with the Bear, with whom she has more in common than she knows. They reunite at a bonfire, where Magdalena spends time with children as their kindergarten teacher.

The kitchen of a forgetful granny comes to life when she’s not around. Saltshaker, sugar bowl and the rest are set to fix what she’s accidently forgotten.

This short but impressive experimental animation was made by students of the Studio of Animation at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art of the University of West Bohemia during a traditional school plein-air. It was inspired by the endlessly elaborate structures of the bark on trees near the Wallenstein Loggia. The students fittingly used the technique of non-phased animation – animation of real photographs.

When Doctor Stein’s best friend dies during his last experiment, the grieving scientist is ready to do everything it takes to get his dog back. Building a dead-reviving machine is not a rocket science for him but this time the experiment goes monstrously wrong. A short stop-motion film about a creator and its monster he despises.

This metaphoric story made using various natural materials is set at the seaside. Its director was inspired by the words of a friend dying of cancer: ‘Our life is like a wave of the sea hitting the shore and we are the drops thrown by the waves on the ground.’ The film was his graduate project at the Graphic College Jihlava.
