Itzel, a young girl of Mayan descent, goes on a camping trip with her father deep in the jungle. As they stargaze together, Itzel’s curiosity leads her to wander off and explore. While wandering, she discovers a jaguar in captivity and, without hesitation, frees the majestic animal. However, their escape is short-lived. While trying to escape, she stumbles upon a mysterious lost Mayan city and experiences a vision of the city’s glory days, guided by a magical jaguar, called Balam.

Based on a major exhibition at the Ashmolean in Oxford, Tokyo Stories spans 400 years of incredibly dynamic art – ranging from the delicate woodblock prints of Hokusai and Hiroshige, to Pop Art posters, contemporary photography, Manga, film, and brand-new artworks that were created on the streets. The exhibition was a smash-hit five-star success and brought a younger and more diverse audience to the museum. The film uses the exhibition as a launchpad to travel to Tokyo itself, and explore the art and artists of the city more fully.

Pixar has been at the forefront of 3D animation innovations for nearly 30 years, developing new methods and technologies with nearly every new project. With their newest feature film “Elemental” hitting theaters, we take a look back at the ways Disney/Pixar has evolved over time. The studio has made advancements in how characters move, going from robotic motion in 1995’s “Toy Story” to characters who can intricately play music in “Coco” and “Soul.” In the early Pixar days, human characters were hidden in the shadows, but breakthroughs in movies like “The Incredibles” and “Brave” paved the way for more believable human characters. And clothes, which were once stiff, took center stage in “Onward” thanks to innovations from movies like “Monsters Inc.”

Our first part of the lecture will focus on pioneers and experiments. We will also find out how Ukrainian animators in the 1920s made advertisements, propaganda, and children’s stories, sometimes even combining all of them in a single artwork. We will also discuss the problems that Ukrainian animation faced and how it bothered and threatened the Soviet government. In the second part of the lecture, we will talk about how and where the animated film heritage is preserved today. What is the size and significance of the animation collection kept at the Dovzhenko Centre.

Maja Gehrig is an animation filmmaker and teacher based in Zurich. She attended a preliminary design course at the Zurich School of Art and Design in 1999-2000. Then, she studied media art for two years at the University of Applied Sciences Aarau, followed by an internship at Eesti Joonisfilm in Tallinn, Estonia. In 2003-2005, she completed the animation degree programme at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Her short animation films use a wide range of techniques and have gained international recognition. Her latest work Average Happiness won several prizes at different festivals, including the Best Swiss Animation award in 2020. Besides making her own films, she teaches at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts on the BA Animation course. Together with Elie Chapuis, she is co-president of ASIFA Switzerland (GSFA).
