I’m Not There is a debut project of Zagreb-based designer and animator Mirta Filipović. Only a few months after her first encounter with 3D animation, she embarked on a mad attempt of making an animation video for the Zagreb-based band Paul The Walrus.I’m Not There is a result of a year and a half of sleepless nights, existential ponderings and questioning why would anyone ever try and make an animated video with only three months’ experience in animation. This animation is a story about power, who has it, who doesn’t and how those who seem to have it nevertheless account to someone greater than them. Hands, eyes and mouth are used as symbols of power and submission. Hands hold power and can shape the world as they please, while eyes and mouth are sensual organs that can only observe and receive impulses.
As the night comes, the journey begins. Running rushing, racing. Unbound from time and swept away by the night’s surreal cascade of lights, we leave day-life behind.
The night is the place where characters move, and images rhythmically dissolve from faces to the night stars, in a smooth transition between images and words.
We’re following a debauched band heading to a bar. There is a dog on the road eating pizza, and they just drive over him without stopping. They don’t know yet that the dog will come back to take revenge.

An attempt on seeking fresh esthetical paths in 3D computer graphics, based on atmosphere and gaining subjective meanings through visual associations. The objects shown in the movie represent different concepts that hold meaning in our lives and to which we commit our attention. Those meanings and that attentions are verified when with time said concepts fade away and dissolve.

This music video is a computer-generated animation made in an open-source program Golly. The program is used as a simulation of cell growth. The background is made with animated objects in the scanner. The story follows the lyrics of the song. First, the growth seems unlimited, then a peak comes, we break and vanish and again and again, the game of life. Behind this circle, an everlasting nostalgia is present.
