This experimental animation by Max Hattler approaches Hong Kong’s built environment from the conceptual perspective of celluloid film, by applying the technique of film animation to the photographic image. The city’s signature architecture of horizon-eclipsing housing estates is reimagined as parallel rows of film strips: Serial Parallels.

The experimental film Sacred Clockworks reflects religion through photographic animation of their impressive sacral architecture. Thereby the Domes of churches, mosques or synagogues are treated like clockworks – infinitely continuous, embodying thousands of years of history. The film examines the dome’s distinctive structure built from multiple layers of circular patterns. It pays homage to the beautiful art that emerged from religious institutions without overlooking the fact that these same institutions led to violence, suffering and death. The film reminds us of the commonalities of different religions by examining the similarities of their sacral architecture. A statement for more tolerance and against any fundamentalism.

Over the years French collector Thomas Sauvin built an archive of more than half a million 35mm negatives, depicting the capital and the life of her inhabitants over the last thirty years. From 2011 to 2012 Lei Lei selected over 3000 photos to create the animation, a epic portrait of anonymous humanity.

Play of abstract forms, patterns, rhythms and sounds. “Quimtai” is an abstract Animation based upon pre-colombian patterns of the now extinct Tairona and Quimbaya indigenous cultures of Colombia and is also inspired by the german absolute cinema. The animation was laser engraved directly onto 35mm Black Lead film as part of an elaborated technical manufacturing process.
