The film is based on a poem Ciganska, written by Miroslav Krleža, one of the greatest Croatian literary authors. The atmosphere, the complex surreal characters, and furthermore, the choice of an austere Krleža’s poem (1936), shows authors have made an aware reference to German expressionism. That way they have focused on depicting the psyche of characters, particularly stressing out ultimate angst, alienation in urban jungle, or baffling drive for self-destruction.

The story revolves around a cormorant bird, who is a symbol of being split between two worlds. Just as people can live between two worlds, so can the cormorant, who is a bird living the life of a fish .
