Synopsis:
What does it mean to be “man” or “woman”? Does this ideas refer just to a social gender role or display more difficult compound? Two beautiful spirits, who’s interaction originate an infinite variety of life manifestations, an endless dance between music and silence, flame and quietness, suffering and joy, love and indifference, life and… life.

Set in a cold nordic country in the beginning of the 19th century, the story is about the stereotypical life of an old man who is working as an awaker, whose job is to wake up people each morning. The monotony of his life is over once he gets an old shiny bell.

Austrian animation director and media-artist Reinhold Bidner is working in the fields of animation, media art and games. In his Masterclass Encounters & Inbetweens, Reinhold talks about and discuss his artistic animated experiments in between various disciplines, formats and techniques. He will also present images and video excerpts. The session was moderated by Animatricks Creative Director Hämid Shajarian.

This animation thematizes a dream that you can’t wake up from. Mubi (夢寐) means dreams you have whilst you are asleep in Japanese. Shakuya mubi (夙夜夢寐) is a four character idiom. It means dreams you have even if you are awake. A young man endures conflict, rapture and anguish. And he will find out why he cannot leave his dream.
