Synopsis:
My second-year film at CalArts. Based on late field biologist John Sincock’s experiences in Kauai. A process video is in the works! It’s gonna take a while, but I’ll link it [here] once I’m done.

The film, released as part of World Environment Day, looks back from 2050 to show how people came together to save the world from the climate and ecological crisis.

Under a scorching sun, Charlie is bored out of her mind and dreams of going to the seaside. But she’s forced to guard a seedy motel with her cousin Jess, who’s slumped in her deckchair. The two teenagers don’t get along and bicker at every opportunity. On the radio, the monotone voice of a collapsology researcher predicts the imminent end of the world.

Itzel, a young girl of Mayan descent, goes on a camping trip with her father deep in the jungle. As they stargaze together, Itzel’s curiosity leads her to wander off and explore. While wandering, she discovers a jaguar in captivity and, without hesitation, frees the majestic animal. However, their escape is short-lived. While trying to escape, she stumbles upon a mysterious lost Mayan city and experiences a vision of the city’s glory days, guided by a magical jaguar, called Balam.

In a heavily polluted world, a young woman mourns the disappearance of animal species. We see her go against the stream of the indifferent masses, and make daily visits to the museum of natural history to make drawings of the ever increasing number of extinct animal species. Her considerate character doesn’t protect her from a bacterial infection when a global pandemic strikes. When her health deteriorates, nature appears to send her a message in her hallucinations.

In a faraway land where the rain never stops, six-year-old Kyna spends her days playing carelessly with her dog Nana under the protective “umbrella beard” of her father, Din. He let it grow in order to shelter Kyna, who developed fear of rain on the day she was born. One night, Kyna’s life turns upside down when Nana disappears. To find her, Kyna will have to embark on an adventure of self discovery and she will be bound to face her great fear, the Rain.
