We follow the story of five immigrants in Budapest, two of whom still live here as refugees. We touch upon various levels of their life – from the banal to the serious. In economic theory, “random walk” means that stock market prices cannot be predicted. Each time, the price has a fifty-fifty chance of closing higher or lower than the previous day. It means that we don’t know how – or where the life of these people going further.

I created “Playtime” in 2010 as part of The Toronto Animated Image Society’s funded project to bring the Group 11 Painters alive with animation. My film was an homage to the life and art of Jock MacDonald. This film was created with paint and decayed frames of Hollywood trailers glued directly onto the surface of 35 mm film strips.

I came up with the whole story by listening to a foreign radio fm in which a narrator told a story about in a language I didn’t understand. Whilst listening to the piece bit by bit, I was able to feel the atmosphere, I somehow understood what it was about and wanted to translate it to myself.
