Synopsis:
Based on interviews of former inmates, this is a glimpse into the most notorious women’s prison in East Germany. An account of political imprisonment, forced labour and enormous profits.

This short film about life after the loss of a loved one deals with a difficult topic, using techniques of both live-action and animated film. Real experiences of the narrators are combined with animated sequences reconstructing painful situations, looking into the thoughts of three young people untimely exposed to death.

Akiko Takakura is one of the last survivors of the atomic bomb explosion of Hiroshima. During Obon, she receives the spirits of her parents and is haunted by memories. Her father is an authoritarian and traditional man. Akiko’s childhood consists of constant rejections and beatings. But the horrors of the atomic bomb and Japan’s subsequent capitulation change everything. Finally Akiko experiences fatherly love in the midst of Hiroshima’s ruins.

In a heavily polluted world, a young woman mourns the disappearance of animal species. We see her go against the stream of the indifferent masses, and make daily visits to the museum of natural history to make drawings of the ever increasing number of extinct animal species. Her considerate character doesn’t protect her from a bacterial infection when a global pandemic strikes. When her health deteriorates, nature appears to send her a message in her hallucinations.

A British chimney sweeper describes his everyday routine of forcing young kids to become workers. While we observe a kid cleaning a chimney, the master’s statement gets more personal with every sentence until we understand, that he is speaking about his own past. Being locked in a vicious circle, there seems to be no exit.
